Every image, its source, and its licence

We use only public-domain or freely-licensed images, and we credit each one here. Faithful photographs of artworks more than a century old (frescoes, mosaics, manuscript miniatures, medieval embroidery) are in the public domain. Where no historical likeness of a person survives, we say so and use period imagery or a clearly-labelled illustration instead — never a fabricated "portrait" presented as real.

The only figures not yet pictured are those with no surviving likeness — Queen Teuta, Audata, and Cynane — for whom we use period imagery or a clearly-labelled illustration rather than a fabricated portrait. The images are currently served from Wikimedia Commons; for the production site they should be downloaded and self-hosted, keeping the same credits shown here.
